The Trump administration has warned China it could apply tariffs of up to 25% on an additional $200bn in Chinese goods, with an announcement due as soon as next week. The new duties will start to hit consumer products directly, including furniture, lighting products, tires, bicycles, and car seats for babies, and news of their potential introduction comes at the end of a public comment period on tariffs. The U.S. has already imposed tariffs on $50bn in Chinese products, with Beijing retaliating with tariffs on $50bn in American goods. Meanwhile a number of technology firms, including Cisco, Dell, and Hewlett Packard, have made a last-minute appeal to the President to protect key products such as networking equipment and accessories from being included on the tariff list, arguing that “it would cause broad, disproportionate economic harm to U.S. interests.
